Let the renovations begin.

It has been almost 3 1/2 years since the Kansas City Ballet decided on the Union Station Power House as the site of its new Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity. Now the organization is ready to start transforming the dilapidated historic structure, at 400 W. Pershing Road, into an airy work and performance space.




For an article I wrote on Roger Federer, which focused on his footwork and his movement, my editor suggested I talk to a ballet dancer or instructor. For that, I e-mailed Roslyn Sulcas, one of our dance critics at The Times.




 

Worlds collide at the corner of Seventh and Market streets. Across the United Nations Plaza is a weekly farmers' market. Up the street is the futuristic Federal Building. On the corner there's a check-cashing joint and a Chinese takeout place. Above it all, behind the ornate terra-cotta decorations on the 1909 Odd Fellows Building, is the Alonzo King Lines Ballet Dance Center, home to thousands of dancers and this year celebrating its 20th anniversary.




On behalf of the Cunningham Dance Foundation and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, it is with great sorrow that we note the passing of Merce Cunningham, who died peacefully in his home last night of natural causes. A statement from the Foundation follows below.
